Preparing a Farm Soil Management Plan
Course Outline
The course will cover the following subject areas ; 1. Introduction a. Requirements for soil under the SFP and European legislation b. Timetable of events
2. Soil Texture and Soil Structure
3. Organic matter - Its importance and maintenance
4. Soil erosion and runoff a. Importance b. Reduction during crop establishment and tillage c. Control in season
5. The benefits of maintaining drainage
6. Livestock and soil conditions
7. Uncropped areas and wildlife habitats
8. The Farm Soil Management plan
9. Summary and exercise
The government has currently outlined the areas where it requires farmers to comply in order to qualify for the Single Farm Payment. There is also proposed legislation regarding the maintenance of soil biodiversity. One area under much discussion is the production of a Single Farm Payment. for the prevention of damage and deterioration of soils, habitats and the environment. The aim of this course is to introduce delegates to the background and target areas for the production of such a plan, the production of which will be compulsory for 2006.
