Course Summary :

The course will look at the importance of maintaining and improving soil structure through cultivations and planned tyre / wheel selection.   It is aimed at operator level and is an important part of our farming future. Without a good soil structure our quality and yields in years to come will be quite poor. Conservation and the environment start with the quality of the soil for growing crops, grassland etc.

Looking at top and sub-soil relative to past and future cultivation needs. Root depths. Compaction. Variable soil types at depth - wet and dry layers. Previous cropping organic matter wet and dry, earthworm activity. Land drains / mole drains. Simple cultivation tine theory, why soils work as they do. Cultivation relative to weather window and cost of operation. Compaction, how it can be avoided.

Tyres - meaning of numbers and letters on tyres. Manufacturers data on loadings / pressures. Tyre differences and their effects on the soil, work rates and compaction.
