Course Summary :
|
The Lantra Awards Level 3 Advanced Certificate in Pesticide Applications (Agriculture) is designed to develop the technical knowledge and practical skills required to apply pesticides to agricultural crops and field scale horticulture using a boom sprayer. The use of pesticides in the land-based sector is subject to stringent legislative requirements to ensure the health and safety of operators and third parties, to contribute to the safe production of food and to protect the environment. This qualification aims to build on the Code of Practice for the Safe Use of Pesticides on Farms and Holdings and ensures that operators use and apply pesticides safely and responsibly, utilising best practice procedures and up to date knowledge of equipment and products. The qualification includes the principles of plant protection practice and integrated crop management, in order to reduce the impact of the use of pesticides on the wider environment. The qualification is designed to provide a progression route from the NPTC Certificate of Competence in the Safe Use of Pesticides, which is currently required by legislation.
- Who is the qualification designed for?
This qualification is aimed at professional pesticide sprayer operators, working in agricultural contexts, who are already competent to the basic level required by legislation and who wish to extend their knowledge and improve their practice.
- What are the aims of the qualification?
This qualification aims to:
- raise standards of pesticides use within agriculture, on a voluntary basis, to a level higher than that currently required by legislation
- reassure consumers that, when it is necessary to treat crops with pesticides, they are used safely and with regard to the environment
- develop technical knowledge which underpins the safe and efficient application of pesticides, so that they are used more effectively and economically
- allow operators to apply technical knowledge and to extend their practical experience through carrying out pesticide spray applications using their own equipment and real products (wherever possible), in the workplace, over a period of time
- What are the benefits from gaining the qualification?
The qualification provides the means for improving the professional practice of sprayer operators and for ensuring that they keep up to date with changes in technology, legislation and research. A package of measures, known as the Voluntary Initiative, has recently been introduced with the aim of reducing the impact of pesticides on the environment. One of the key components of the Voluntary Initiative is continuing professional development (CPD). All sprayer operators are encouraged to register on the National Register of Sprayer Operators (NRoSO) and must gain 30 CPD points over a 3 year period in order to maintain their registration. This qualification and Lantra Awards pesticides training courses attract CPD points.
